This spring at St. Paul’s we’re taking some time to rediscover the joy of being the church in real life. Many of us are discovering that something just doesn’t feel right. We sense that the digital devices most of us carry and most of us rely to run our lives at home and at work are also reshaping the way we relate to each other and the world. For all the promise of our digital life and for all the ways it keeps us connected to each other, we are truly thankful. Yet, for the many ways the increased connection has deepened our sense of loneliness and isolation, contributed to contentiousness and kept us from focusing on what’s really important in life, we are truly sorry.
What being church does best is connect people to God’s unconditional love, mercy and abundant generosity in Jesus Christ and by doing so creates a community where we can connect to each other lovingly, mercifully, and generously. This is being church in real life. It turns out, there are five important reason to unplug and be church in real life. Michael Frost outlines five habits of highly missional people in his book Surprise the World. That is to say, these are five habits of people whose relationship with Jesus leads them to seek out deeper and closer relationships with the people in their lives. Here are the habits, Frost outlines. They are at the heart of being church in real life.
On behalf of the St. Paul’s community, I want to invite you to join us for dinner, friendly conversation and a resetting of our lives so that we can know that in Jesus Christ we’re beloved, we belong and we’re called to be community for and with each other in real life. Call (732) 287-0888 for more information.
Peace,
Rev. James Krombholz, D.Min.
